WebVaginal Gram stain, considered the reference standard laboratory method for diagnosing BV, is used to determine the relative concentration of lactobacilli (i.e., long gram-positive rods), small gram-negative and gram-variable rods (i.e., G. vaginalis or Bacteroides), and curved gram-negative rods (i.e., Mobiluncus) characteristic of BV. WebIts Gram-positive activity is limited to Streptococcus spp., E. faecalis, and MSSA. It does NOT have activity against MRSA or Stenotrophomonas spp. It is also active against wide range of anaerobes. Acceptable Use Empiric treatment for severe infections in patients where broad spectrum coverage is needed, including Pseudomonas spp.
